Knicks’ Robinson fined $25,000 for agent’s remarks

NEW YORK (AP)—Benched New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson(notes) was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Monday after his agent made a trade request.

Robinson has not played in the Knicks’ last 12 games. A two-time winner of the All-Star slam dunk contest, he has played in only 12 games this season and is averaging 11 points.

Agent Aaron Goodwin recently told reporters he’d asked the Knicks to move Robinson to another team. Robinson was fined for statements detrimental to the NBA.

“Players are not permitted to make trade requests publicly and are responsible for public statements relating to them made by their representatives,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank said.

Goodwin said the benching was personal, not basketball related. A day after Goodwin’s comments on Dec. 19, Knicks president Donnie Walsh said he would probably begin talks with the agent about a trade.

Goodwin didn’t immediately respond to telephone and e-mail messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Robinson averaged a career-high 17.2 points last season as the Knicks’ sixth man. He was a restricted free agent in the offseason and re-signed with a one-year contract.

Kobe leading, Iverson surging in latest All-Star voting

Tracy McGrady knows good and well why he's in the running to make his seventh All-Star Game start despite playing just 45 minutes this season.

"Well, 90 percent is all my Chinese fans," T-Mac said, laughing. "We have a great relationship. That started when I was in Orlando. I used to go over there [China] every summer. Those are great fans. I enjoy my time over there, and I've gotten to know them throughout the years. It's been great. They've been very supportive through the good, the bad and the ugly. I appreciate them still sticking with me."

The league and the members of the All-Star ballot committee also stood by McGrady. Unlike his injured teammate Yao Ming, who may be a smidge more popular in China, T-Mac was included on the ballot despite having microfracture surgery on his left knee in late February. That procedure typically takes a full year to recover, but McGrady returned earlier this month.

McGrady did slip from second to third among Western Conference guards in the latest balloting returns released today. Kobe Bryant of the Lakers continues to lead that race and is the overall vote pacesetter with 1,380,383 million ballots cast. (See the complete totals in the official release.)
The All-Star Game is headed to the Dallas Cowboys new stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 14 before a record crowd possibly hitting 100,000 -- a figure that both Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones are shooting for. The All-Star Game is being broadcast live on TNT and ESPN Radio domestically, and to more than 200 countries abroad.
Right behind Bryant in the overall popularity department is LeBron James. The Cavaliers' two-time All-Star MVP is leading the Eastern Conference with 1,351,292 votes. The only other players with more than a million votes are Carmelo Antony (Nuggets), Dwayne Wade (Heat), Dwight Howard (Magic) and Kevin Garnett (Celtics).

The biggest surprise is in the East, as Allen Iverson has surged in the guard race. Originally on the West ballot, Iverson has gone from sixth place in the first returns two weeks ago to a starting slot opposite Wade. Vince Carter (Magic) has dropped from second to third.
The rest of the East start lineup, as of now, includes James and Garnett at forward, and Howard at center. The West consists of Bryant and Steve Nash (Suns) in the backcourt, Anthony and Dirk Nowitzki (Mavericks) at forwards, and Amar'e Stoudemire (Suns) in the middle.
McGrady is perhaps relieved by the league's assist leader moving into second. He isn't too keen on taking a spot in the All-Star Game if he finished with starter's votes.

"No, I don't think I'd play," McGrady said. "I would attend, just to show my appreciation and my thanks to my fans. But you have guys like Steve Nash, Chris Paul and Deron Williams, guys who have been playing since Day 1 and are very deserving of being out there. I don't know which ones will start, but all three of them can. I think they're very deserving."

McGrady and Nash each have more than 500,000 votes and are separated by less than 5,000. The only other guard currently with at least a half-million is Paul of the Hornets. T-Mac added that stepping aside, if he's in position to start, is the only right thing to do by his fellow players.

"Yes, that's all it boils down to -- respecting my peers and knowing what's right," McGrady said. "Thanks to my fans, but at the same time I respect the guys who should be on that team."
Updated balloting results will be issued regularly leading up the announcement of the All-Star starters Jan. 21 on TNT. After the starters are determined, the head coaches will vote on the remaining All-Stars in their respective conference. That announcement is Jan. 28 on TNT.

Kobe leads way in second returns of All-Star Game voting

Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets top the Western Conference, while LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat lead the Eastern Conference after the second returns of 2010 NBA All-Star Balloting presented by T-Mobile. Bryant, a three-time All-Star MVP, is the overall leader with 1,380,383 votes, while James, a two-time All-Star MVP, is second overall with 1,351,292.

The 2010 NBA All-Star Game, which will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the U.S., and reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages, will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, before an expected crowd of more than 80,000 -- the largest group ever to witness a live basketball game -- on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010.

In the Western Conference, Bryant, who shared the MVP award with Shaquille O'Neal in last year's All-Star Game and who also garnered the honor in 2002 and 2007, is followed at guard by the Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash (546,064). Anthony paces forwards in the West (1,204,234) with the Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki (668,243) second. The Suns' Amar'e Stoudemire (950,737) is the leading vote-getter among Western Conference centers, with the Lakers' Andrew Bynum (588,471) following.
The guards in the Eastern Conference are paced by Wade (1,314,215), followed by the Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson (635,084). While Iverson appears among Western Conference guards on the paper ballot because he began the season with Memphis, his votes count towards the Eastern Conference guards due to his signing with Philadelphia Dec. 3. James, a two-time All-Star MVP (2006, 2008), paces Eastern Conference forwards with 1,351,292 votes, followed by the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett (1,113,213), MVP of the 2003 All-Star Game. The Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard leads all centers with 1,252,786 votes; the Cavaliers' O'Neal is second among centers in the East (455,239).
2010 NBA All-Star Balloting presented by T-Mobile, with associate partner 2K Sports, allows fans worldwide to vote daily for their favorite players as starters for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game. For the first time, fans can vote for All-Stars any time by texting a player's last name from their mobile phones. Fans can cast one SMS vote per day, per phone number.
There are several ways fans can cast their votes, including: at each NBA arena; in 20 languages on NBA.com; and through mobile phones by texting the player's last name to 6-9-6-2-2 ("MYNBA"), via Web2Go® on T-Mobile phones or wap.nba.com for any wireless carrier. A T-Mobile-branded All-Star Balloting widget is also available on NBA.com so that fans can "grab" the widget and place it on their blogs, social network pages, or personal Web sites allowing others to vote directly from the widget. Paper balloting will continue through Jan. 10, while wireless balloting and voting on NBA.com will conclude Jan. 18.
Updated results for the Eastern and Western Conferences will be issued regularly leading up to the announcement of the All-Star starters on Thursday Jan. 21, prior to a TNT doubleheader. Following the completion of fan voting and the starting line-up announcement, the head coaches in each conference will vote to determine the remaining All-Stars in their respective conference, which will be announced Thursday, Jan. 28 prior to a TNT doubleheader.
The NBA All-Star ballot lists 120 players -- 60 each from the Eastern and Western conferences -- with 24 guards, 24 forwards, and 12 centers from each conference comprising the list. Voters select two guards, two forwards and one center from each conference. The 120 players on the ballot were selected by a panel of media who regularly cover the NBA: Mike Breen (ABC/ESPN), Eddie Sefko (Dallas Morning News), Doug Smith (The Toronto Star and President, Pro Basketball Writers Association) Marc Spears (Yahoo! Sports), Marc Stein (ESPN.com) and Ian Thomsen (Sports Illustrated).
NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas will bring together some of the most talented and passionate players in the league's history for a global celebration of the game. The week leading up to the 59th NBA All-Star Game will feature a full slate of community-enhancing activities and fan festivals, including NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas and the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam. This will be the second NBA All-Star in Dallas. The city also hosted the event in 1986.
In conjunction with All-Star Balloting, 2K Sports will give fans the opportunity to experience Dallas and the best of basketball by entering the NBA® 2K10 Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip to NBA All-Star 2010 and have their likeness as a digitized player incorporated in next year's game, NBA® 2K11.

Jerry Jones shooting for 100K at All-Star Game

Jerry Jones is clear on what he's shooting for when the NBA All-Star Game takes center stage inside his football palace.

"Well, we want to push the magical number and we think we have an opportunity here," the visionary Dallas Cowboys owner said Saturday afternoon before the Texas-North Carolina college game. "We're well along the way right now: One-double-O."

That's Jones-speak for 100,000 fans jamming Cowboys Stadium for the NBA's Feb. 14 showcase event, which is being broadcast by TNT and ESPN Radio. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has also plugged that "magical" number since the All-Star Game was awarded to the Dallas area over a year ago.

Usually the hype created by the All-Star Game is centered squarely on the league's best and brightest, with Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and their brethren carrying the weekend. The $1.3 billion stadium and those filling its seats are sharing the bill this time around.

Jones said the NBA, Mavericks and Cowboys have sold nearly 90,000 tickets already. NBA executive Ski Austin has been on site working with the Cowboys on the seating configuration, which includes sections being constructed around the court in addition to the normal football stands.

Austin is wary about throwing around the 100,000 goal.

"People are excited about what the opportunity is here," he said. "We'll know really at the end of the day if there can be that many people. Science and physics tell me that it's more prudent just to say in the 80s. Either way it's a record crowd and a great experience."

Jones has experience with six-figure crowds. The first regular-season game at the Cowboys Stadium three months ago set the NFL attendance record at 105,121.

The largest crowd ever to watch a basketball game is 78,129 for Kentucky-Michigan State in 2003. The NBA has had several teams play in domes over the years and Texas has hosted two previous All-Star Games at football stadiums. The Hawks set the regular-season record with 62,046 fans at the Georgia Dome on March 27, 1998.

The current All-Star attendance record of 44,735 was set at the Houston Astrodome in 1989. San Antonio had 36,037 at the Alamodome in 1996. The turnout for the upcoming clash between the elite of the Western and Eastern Conferences promises to surpass both those games combined.

Saturday's game between two top-10 programs was viewed as a dress rehearsal by the NBA and Cowboys Stadium, with the setup being very similar for the All-Star Game. Jones said the massive 80-yard video scoreboard, which dwarfs the raised basketball court, should help fans suffering from arena withdrawal.

"It'll be intimate," Jones assured. "It'll have an energy that's hard to replicate for basketball. This is something that we've planned on and hoped for."

Top scorers (and T-Mac) lead pack in All-Star voting

There's Kobe and LeBron, D-Wade and 'Melo, Dwight and KG. Many of the usual suspects rank high atop the leaderboard in the first round of All-Star balloting released Thursday.
Five of the NBA's top six scorers are in position to start in what promises to be the most-attended basketball game ever. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is shooting for 100,000 fans -- 80,000 might be more realistic -- when the 2010 All-Star Game sets up shop at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 14.
The record gathering is expected to feature the NBA's best and brightest, and if the early returns in the voting by the fans are any indication, that's exactly what's going to happen. Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant, the league's top scorers, pace the Western Conference voting, while LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, fourth and fifth, lead everyone out East. (See the complete totals in the official release.)
Bryant is the overall leader with 692,518 votes and, naturally, first among West guards. The three-time All-Star MVP is averaging 28.8 points a game for the defending champion Lakers, who own the league's best record. One of the few early surprises: Tracy McGrady (281,545) is second among guards in the voting, in line for a starting spot. The injured Houston swingman has yet to play a game this season. He is a seven-time All-Star.
Assists leader Steve Nash (272,135) of the Suns is right behind T-Mac. Nash, a two-time MVP who didn't make the All-Star team last season in Phoenix, is playing the best ball of his career, according to Suns coach Alvin Gentry. Chris Paul (Hornets) and Jason Kidd (Mavericks) -- second and fifth in assists, respectively -- are the only other guards with more than 200,000 votes. Deron Williams (Jazz) is third in assists, but 10th in voting.
Amar'e Stoudemire (Suns) has a healthy lead of nearly 150,000 votes over Andrew Bynum (Lakers) in the West center race. Chris Kaman (Clippers) is having one of the better seasons for West centers, averaging 18.7 and 8.5 rebounds, but he wasn't on the ballot and didn't grab enough write-in votes to appear among the leaders.
Anthony leads West forwards in votes (588,958) and the league in scoring (29.8). 'Melo has been voted the starter once in his career (2008) and appears well on his way to a second selection.
Dirk Nowitzki (Mavs) has the inside track on the second forward spot with 366,300 votes. The 2007 MVP is an eight-time All-Star, but he's never been voted a starter. (He did start in 2007 as an injury replacement.)
"It would be an honor to be voted as a starter by the fans, but either way I hope to play in my home city," Nowitzki said Thursday.
Tim Duncan (Spurs) has been the West standard bearer at forward for a decade, with 10 All-Star starts in 11 appearances. Duncan is currently fourth, trailing Anthony, Nowitzki and Pau Gasol of the Lakers. Kevin Durant (Thunder) is third in scoring overall, but just fifth in voting among forwards.
In the Eastern Conference, the trio of James, Wade and Dwight Howard might as well book their tickets to Big D. James, a five-time starter representing the Cavaliers, has 649,327 votes to top all East forwards. Kevin Garnett (Celtics) is second with a respectable total of 533,187. Chris Bosh (Raptors) is the only forward currently in striking distance at 303,550.
"It means a lot to me to be a guy that the fans voted for,'' Howard said. "It's the best when the fans are voting for you and that's the highest praise. The All-Star Game is still a lot of fun, and I always like being around the other guys.''
The East backcourt could be an all-Florida affair with Wade (Heat) joined by Magic newcomer Vince Carter, who's tallied 292,002 votes. Carter may have five All-Star starts under his belt, but a sixth won't be a slam dunk. Gilbert Arenas (Wizards), Ray Allen (Celtics) and Derrick Rose (Bulls) are all around 200,000 votes. And don't forget the reborn-Sixers favorite Allen Iverson, who's in sixth place. Iverson has made very All-Star game since the 2000 game in Oakland, Calif.
"It's always an honor. It's actually hard to believe that I'm up there,'' Carter said. "If I'm fortunate enough to get there, then it's a great honor. But we'll see.''
Howard (Magic) is running away with the East vote at center with 625,279, more than doubling perennial All-Star scene-stealer Shaquille O'Neal of the Cavs.
The All-Star Game is being broadcast live on TNT and ESPN Radio domestically, and to more than 200 countries (in 40 languages).

Lakers' Andrew Bynum making All-Star push

Center is close to joining Toronto's Chris Bosh as the only players in the league averaging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Andrew Bynum, forgotten man?

Amid all the attention heaped upon the return of Pau Gasol, the Lakers' 22-year-old center served notice that, um, he's still playing too.

Bynum had 25 points on nine-for-11 shooting in the Lakers' 101-85 victory Sunday over the Oklahoma City Thunder. He also had nine rebounds and made all seven of his free throws in almost 29 minutes.

Toronto forward-center Chris Bosh is the only player in the league averaging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, though Bynum is close to being there too.

He is now averaging 19.9 points and 11.2 rebounds.

Are the All-Star voters paying attention?

"I hope to make it," Bynum said. "That's really a goal I had coming into this season. I think I'm playing at the level I need to be playing. All I can do is get votes now. I've got to keep it up."

The All-Star game is Feb. 14 in Dallas.

Bynum didn't seem affected Sunday after sitting out two days of practice to rest a sore right ankle that he rolled Thursday against Chicago.

With Gasol often setting up in the high post, there's plenty of room for Bynum to operate down low.

"As the season goes on, both of us are going to do better together," Bynum said. "I think we'll be a stronger team because everybody will be scoring. We'll be able to get more assists. A lot less double-teaming [by opponents], and we'll be able to be more efficient."

Gasol is averaging 19.5 points, 10 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games. He missed 11 games because of a strained right hamstring.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, who often bites his tongue when asked to positively assess Bynum's game, was no different Sunday.

He wants to see more from Bynum in the defensive end.

"Offensively, he did fine. I'll say that for sure," Jackson said. "Defensively, he wasn't at the [proper] rotation. He didn't run back on defense. Those are the type of things that I'm always pushing him to do a little bit more work on."

Opponents apparently see otherwise.

Oklahoma City Coach Scott Brooks said the combination of Bynum and Gasol on defense was "very difficult" to penetrate.

"They're long. They protect the rim, they protect the paint," Brooks said. "They're not playing with their hands down. They are a very talented defensive team that passes the ball very well."

NBA sets '10 All-Star Game at new Cowboys stadium

Danny Turner/ESPN.com
DALLAS -- The NBA All-Star Game is coming to the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in 2010 and plenty of good seats are available -- more than 100,000.
Living up to the old adage about doing things bigger in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks and Cowboys are collaborating on hosting next season's showcase event. It will be among the first major events at the soon-to-be-completed, $1.1 billion facility in nearby Arlington.
Citing sources, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Tuesday that the Mavericks with the NFL's Cowboys would host the 2010 All-Star Game.
And if all goes according to plan, this event will set the record for the largest crowd ever to watch an NBA game, shattering the mark of 44,735 set at the 1989 All-Star Game, not-so-coincidentally held at another Texas-sized venue, the Houston Astrodome.
"It's totally outrageous," NBA commissioner David Stern said.
Just wait until he hears Mavs owner Mark Cuban's idea about putting the record out of reach.
"If we can get people to sit on each other's laps, it could be 200,000," Cuban said, laughing.
The 2010 All-Star weekend is being hyped as a collaboration between teams and cities. Some events will be held at the Dallas Convention Center, with the Mavericks' arena hosting the rookie game on Friday night and the Saturday night festivities, which include the 3-point and dunk contests.
The marquee game will be Sunday, with center court right at midfield of the football stadium.
"We've got complete flexibility with the configuration," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "That's what we spent a lot of money on, to adapt it to these kinds of events."
The Cowboys are also trying to lure Final Fours. They've already landed the 2011 Super Bowl, as well as the Cotton Bowl, starting Jan. 1, 2010.
The All-Star announcement came during an outdoor news conference that was as over-the-top as the attendance goal. Marv Albert was the master of ceremonies, the Mavericks dancers took part and it ended with a 10-second countdown to the unveiling of the game's logo, which features a version of the Cowboys' star logo in blue and green, the Mavericks' colors.
Cuban used to be against hosting the All-Star Game because he couldn't accommodate his fans and the league's commitments. But having it in Jones' stadium makes everyone happy.
"I started thinking about it the minute I heard of [the stadium plans]," Cuban said. "It was just a question of whether the NBA would go along with it."
Mavs president Terdema Ussery said it took Stern four months to approve their proposal.
"I just wanted to make sure my guys didn't think it wasn't so crazy, and I didn't think it wasn't so crazy," Stern said.
The game will be on Feb. 14, 2010. This season's game will be in Phoenix.
The All-Star Game was in Dallas once before, in 1986. The 3-point contest started that year as the brainchild of a team executive and local product Spud Webb won the dunk contest.
The last football stadium to host the NBA All-Star Game was San Antonio's Alamodome in 1996.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

DALLAS -- The 2010 NBA All-Star Ballot was unveiled today during a special tipoff event in Dallas, the official Host City of NBA All-Star 2010. NBA All-Star Balloting presented by T-Mobile will begin Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. ET. 14, 2010.
2010 NBA All-Star Balloting presented by T-Mobile, with associate partner 2K Sports, allows fans around the world to vote daily for their favorite players as starters for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game. For the first time in balloting history, fans can vote for All-Stars any time by texting a player's last name from their mobile phones.
A T-Mobile-branded All-Star Balloting widget will also be available on NBA.com so that fans can "grab" the widget and place it on their blogs, social network pages or personal Web sites allowing others to vote directly from the widget. Paper balloting will continue through January 10, while wireless balloting and voting on NBA.com will conclude January 18. Starters will be announced live on TNT on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.
